Last July was the second time I come to this place after 2014. Hopefully it wasn't the last. I cant explain to you how amazing it is. The only way to feel what I felt is come to Semeru with me. Semeru is plateau area located on 3 regencies (Malang, Lumajang, Probolinggo) in East Java. The top called Mahameru, Maha is a prefix to show something big and great. Easiest way to get there is by taking a flight direct to Abdurrachman Saleh Airport in Malang. Another way is using train (You can save much money). As you arrive in Malang, go to Tumpang where in this place you take 4x4 going up to Ranu Pani village just below the Semeru. It takes 2 hours but you wont regret because the scenery is Amazing. You will see such view just like in LOTR movies, like in the Middle Earth.
The track of this mountain is not tough. Thats why many visitors come to this place. My suggestion is better not to come in high season. Come in Des-Jan and Jul-Aug is not recommended. In Ranu Pani All the papers must be cleared before start tracking. Starting from Ranu Pani, first destination is Ranu Kumbolo. Ranu means lake in Tengger language. Tengger is the name for the ethnic group live in that area. In the past, they were javanese who ran away after Majapahit imperium that spread from Malaysia to Papua that centered in Java as capital ruined. These people can be identified since they always use sarung round sheet to cover from cold. Ranu Kumbolo is my favorit place to contemplate since the quiet and beauty. In dry season, the temperature there can be below 0. Normally it takes 4-5 hours to be there from Ranu Pani. After being exhausted tracking from Ranu Pani to Ranu Kumbolo, the view will get your power back, i guarantee. You better erect the tent here and stay for one night before continue.
After enjoying the sunrise that emerge from behind the two hills in front of Ranu Kumbolo, you may continue to hike. First challenge right after Ranu Kumbolo is Tanjakan Cinta or Love Hike. There is a myth that if you think about someone you love along the hike from below tanjakan cinta until the top and you do not look back, you and the one who you think will be together forever. After the hike, another beauty appears. It is Oro-oro ombo. Large field of (most people think) Lavender. Actually the plant origin is from Brazil. Although the plant making the beauty, they actually not good for the native plants there. They compete with the local plants. 1 km long walk through this flat field then you must go upper again tobe in Kalimati. Totally it takes 4 hours from Ranu Kumbolo to Kalimati. You may erect tent again here to take a rest.
Around midnight is the best time to start the summit. You leave all your belongings in tent and bring necessary things and also safety kits. The summit attack takes 6 hours walks through the sand and rock with the elevation around 60. This is the real challenge since the start in Ranu Pani. You must watch if there is rock falling so your head is safe. I cant explain how hard it is but you must prepare yourself very well for this. I almost make my eyes burst into tears when i put my feet on the top of the mountain (Mahameru). In 2014 i can't make it although its only 100 meters remaining from the top. I learn, we must know our limit. The mountain is always there, you can come again tomorrow, next month or next year. Its better to keep your health rather than not making to the top and lose your life. I know this writings is not good and surely cant depict how mesmerizing semeru is. Tips : Come to Tumpang early morning. You can share cost from Tumpang to Ranu Pani with other hikers since the visitor from Jakarta usually arrive in the morning by train there.
